Restrictions Softening for Americans Buying Cuban Cigars and Rum!!

By David on October, 19th 2016 - 2:06 am

Recent news on Friday from the Obama administration was warmly if not a tad unexpectedly welcomed by Topcubans. The news was that further restrictions for Cuban made alcohol and tobacco products would be lifted and be on the same levels as restrictions from any other countries. So that is 1 litre of alcohol - Havana Club for example and then up to 100 Cuban cigars.

Simply put Americans will not have a hard time with the customs agents at the airport should you be carrying Cuban cigars or rum which of course is amazing news. About time to, it was always such a silly rule that was frequently abused and common-sense has prevailed on this one. We still will need to wait for an Act of Congress to rescind the Cuban trade embargo, but with more of these restrictions being lifted, it really does pave the way for the embargo being acted upon in the next session of Congress.

We want everyone to think of Topcubans when Cuban cigars cross your mind, and with our experience and service we believe beats all the other options you have out there, we are always here to help with any questions on rules, regulations and of course all things cigars!

Happy Smoking!

Topcubans Anticipates the Next Phase for Cubans in America

By David on July, 13th 2016 - 6:05 pm

Topcubans understand that the process of getting Cuban products to the US market, particularly in the food and drinks industry and the tobacco industry will have expensive and time consuming hurdles to jump through before getting permission to do so. Basically anything that the FDA department covers in their remit, so that concerns our area of cigars.

Despite warming relations at least on CNN and looking at Obama speak sunshine on all things Cuba, the embargo remains, covering all cigars except those purchased in Cuba and then returning back to the US on a regulated charter flight or cruise. This looks like it will remain for some time. They estimate it could cost up to 1 million Dollars per brand to deal with the red-tape and get FDA approval. Legal challenges by various non Cuban but same-named brands will also draw out this process. At the end we anticipate a messy process, and sadly there will be some brands that Cuba does not feel they have the need or demand to go through with the steps and this will result only limited brands being available , at least at the beginning of the process. Monte 2s, Cohibas, Partagas, but probably not the San cristabal or the Por Larranaga brands, firm favourites of Cuban fans, but it will be up to the Habanos executives to see whether they deem them "ready" for the US market. We hope so but we expect some spanners in the works at Topcubans.

Feel free to mail me any thoughts you may have on this interesting issue. You can read an excellent article on this here:

Ski Season and What Everyone is Smoking!

By David on February, 22nd 2016 - 4:01 am

Ski season is here, and I am just on the way back from a wonderful weekend up the mountains. We have clients from all over the world, so we have to try and cater for clients sunning themselves in the Tropics, and those like us are putting up with the troubles of Winter. Topcubans always love to look on the bright side of life with some positive comments, whether is be heading up the mountains for a quality cigar with a gorgeous view, or jumping on a plane to Winter Sun, there is no right answer but I hope we are all on the same page?!

I have had some cracking H Upmann Magnum 46 cigars this weekend, musty and bold, ideal with a nip in the air. Feel free to share your weekend experiences with us, we love to hear what and where you all are, it keeps us going!

New Anejados Range & Superbowl Cigar Fun

By David on February, 05th 2016 - 6:32 pm

Weekend is here, all the more important for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere trying to fight through the cold each day to work! We have a new release on our Prestigious Page which will surely sell out in record time. The Anejados Range has been a new branding exercise by Habanos, started last year and has proven to be quite the success. What's not to love about cigars already aged and ready to smoke in their prime?! These ones are dated from 2007 so are just such a pleasure to smoke.

It may not be in time to order them for the Superbowl this Sunday, but I know many of you have been ordering this past week or 2 with this in mind. We of course wish both teams well, and I have some of my favourite Hoyo Epicure No 2s (ON SALE) lined up to smoke during the game, and then we'll see if I bring out one of those big bazooka Double Cos to celebrate a Broncos win! Fingers crossed for Peyton, we send our best over from Geneva.

Enjoy your weekend everyone

Much fun to watch, with a Glenfiddich and a Ramon Allones Gigantes in hand!

I hope you all are enjoying the weather wherever you are, in the suns of Mexico and the Caribbean or the Winters of the Northern Hemisphere, there is never a bad situation to take some time to enjoy a quality Cuban, so feel free to share with us your experiences.

And A Happy New Year!

By David on December, 31st 2015 - 7:08 pm

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. What does 2016 have in store for us. Well in the cigar world, the Cuban Embargo is on everyone's mind, a new US President could really accelerate or slow down the ground work Mr Obama has done. The steps taken are fairly cosmetic still, but a clear desire and path seems to be there for the next President to do as they wish and potentially go down in history. I don't believe Mr Obama has enough time to get anything concrete done with less than a year to go.
The issue is highly complex and in our view will take several years to negotiate but it does look like our American friends could be seeing Cuban cigars washing to their shores in at least the medium term.

I hope you all have a wonderful New Year and we look forward to sharing our cigar stories with you in 2016.

Tubos Cigars We Love

By David on July, 25th 2015 - 12:26 am

We love tubos at Topcubans, they make ideal gifts or for taking out on a night on the town. Ideal for holidays, or for the golf course. Does it make the smoke better? Of course not, but they look great and add great protection to your expensive little prizes. Richard and I tend to just use them for taking them out of the humidor but it is not a problem to store them in the tubos whilst in your humidor. I hope you are having great vacations all over the world, and enjoy your tubos!

Heatwave in Geneva

By David on July, 09th 2015 - 2:19 am

It has been baking hot in Geneva the past few days, finally we are getting some rest-bite from record temperatures almost touching 40 degrees C, into the 100s for you Americans out there! Some of you maybe used to such temperatures, but us poor Europeans are not.

It makes it that bit harder to find a good light cigar to go with the immense heat. Make sure you have an ice cold drink, a gin and tonic or a mojito to hand as well. Plenty of ice. Topcubans takes safety very seriously and we wouldn't want any of our great clients and avid readers to come over with heat stroke with cigar in hand would we!

I hope all of you enjoy the great Summer weather, keep sending in your stories and experiences of where you are and what you are smoking, we really do enjoy reading all about it. Usual place is to get in touch.

The 17th Habanos Festival 2015

By David on February, 24th 2015 - 5:25 am

Our favourite time of year is upon us once again folks, the Habanos Festival kicked off today and what an event it should be this year.

Whilst much of the Northern Hemisphere is shrouded in cold miserable weather, we are off the Havana to drink some great mojitos and smoke the best cigars in the world in blissful sunshine.

Among this year's brands to be celebrated are the Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta cigars which are always a firm favourite of Topcubans staffers! The Festival has the usual mix of new releases, lots of hype, pomp and ceremony but mainly it is simply just a great place to reunite with old friends and to share in the passion that are our favourite Cuban cigars. A must-do event for any cigar fan, and to explore an absolutely beautiful country.
