A brief History of Father’s Day

Very early traces of Father’s Day celebrations date back to pre-human times (a Father’s Day celebration was recently discovered at an archeological dig in Peru that pre-dates the Dinosaurs). It may be that the meteor that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs may have also put an abrupt end to early Father’s Day celebrations. For millions of years Father’s Day celebrations remained dormant. Scholars believe the celebration may have been re-discovered by accident in Babylonian times. Records show that a young boy called Elmesu Hallmark carved a crude Father's Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago in an act of defiance toward the matriarchal leadership of the time. Elmesu openly wished his Dad ‘good health and a long life’, offering him a cigar to enjoy on that day which was against the laws of the time. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu or his father (although a shredded document with the washed out words ‘Double Corona….bloody men…..cutter…..Petit Corona……’ can be found in the Museum of Bern, Switzerland, indicating that both men may have had their lives cut short). The tradition of celebrating a day honoring Father’s took hold, with many lucky fathers round the world receiving a cigar to enjoy on their day. Father's Day celebrations continued to evolve into what we know and love today. These traditions have since spread to many countries around the world.
